GenServe Rescues Major Medical Center’s Expansion Project

ISSUE:
A large medical center undergoing a major expansion project didn’t have sufficient back-up power to enable them to disconnect from Con Edison while installing a new buss line to provide power to the new wings.

SOLUTION:
GenServe’s professional technicians worked with the hospital to develop a plan for shifting to emergency power without major interruptions to patient care. The hospital scheduled the event during a slower period, cancelled elective surgical procedures and shut down all non-essential systems and equipment. GenServe ran all new cables for emergency buss lines to portable back- up generators to supply all the necessary power to the hospital while Con Edison shut down the utility.

GenServe worked in concert with the entire hospital engineering staff and the electrical contracting team as key personnel throughout the campus communicated over a wireless system. The network of portable units professionally staged and properly installed by GenServe’s expertly trained technicians powered the entire facility while Con Ed finished their buss line work.

GenServe also supplied ancillary lighting, as the bulk of this project was performed during the night, and kept a fuel truck on site to be able to re-fuel the generators running prime power.

The hospital engineering staff commended the GenServe team when the Con Ed buss line extension was successfully completed under budget and 24 hours earlier than predicted.

ISSUE:
A major NYC hospital had been running on full generator power after Hurricane Sandy. The hospital had two concerns and possible threats to its emergency power supply system. First, the generators, running for prolonged hours, needed to be serviced to maintain their operational integrity as well as be compliant with maintenance protocol. Second, due to the extended run time, their fuel supply was beginning to get critically low and could have led to the evacuation of the entire facility.

SOLUTION:
GenServe technicians performed major PM’s on the generators to assure they remained fully operational and compliant and to prevent equipment failure. Additionally, after being alerted to the low fuel condition, GenServe arranged for emergency fueling of all the generators on site allowing the hospital to avert a costly evacuation.

Health care facilities avoid evacuation with GenServe’s emergency fuel service after Hurricane Sandy

ISSUE:
After Hurricane Sandy, many diesel-powered generators began to run low on fuel. Although most facilities have their own fuel suppliers, many fuel companies were unable to cover the ongoing requests and several were unable to secure fuel as the power outages continued. Fuel shortages were especially troubling for healthcare facilities, because Joint Commission regulations require a plan that provides 96 hours of fuel for emergency stand-by generators.

SOLUTION:
GenServe’s long-standing relationships with fuel delivery companies enabled them to respond to assist several major healthcare facilities. Without GenServe, many would have had to close and evacuate their facilities. In addition, GenServe had arranged emergency fuel supply contracts for several customers before the storm, assuring them that there would be a fuel tanker in a secure location poised to supply them at any time if they needed to refuel their generators. These emergency fuel contracts allowed the facilities to meet Joint Commission guidelines for their 96-hour emergency fueling plan.

Auto parts distributor prepares for future in aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

ISSUE:
A major auto parts distributor with facilities located throughout the US experienced severe and extremely costly outages due to Hurricane Sandy. All operational functions including parts distribution, information technology and sales had all but ceased during and immediately after the storm.

SOLUTION:
GenServe offered to install a permanent transfer switch allowing them to rent a generator as needed that would provide full facility backup, but the effects of Sandy prompted their upper management to purchase a permanent stand-by generator large enough to provide immediate full-facility back up in the event of any future power outage. GenServe provided a customized solution with a Baldor generator sized to meet their specifications.
